Are you avoiding learning about furniture placement because you are not a Feng Shui consultant? Better not, because whether you place your desk facing the wall, facing the window or in direct line with the door, the last thing you need is a business that is gasping for air and goes down.
Okay, fasten your seat belt as we race our way into the power behind furniture placement in your office. Find out for yourself how the placement of your desk affects your business opportunities.
When you stand in the doorway in you office what is the first thing you see? Is it a beautiful plant, an overflowing trash can, or the back of your desk? Whatever you see sets the tone for everything that happens in your office from your ability to plan, take action, provide service to clients, and make money. The tone is set whether you work there with clients or alone. If you do see clients in your office, they also form an impression of how you do business based on the tone of your office.
The question to ask is what tone is present in your office now based on what you see. Is the tone one of being overwhelmed and disorganized due to clutter, working hard and not getting anywhere, let me out of here, or confidence and success? If the office tone is not supportive to success you will have to work harder, longer and use more energy to get things done.
Now that you have determined the tone of your office space the next thing to do is fix what is holding you back. Here are three Feng Shui principles for arranging your desk that will position you to take advantage of your opportunities:
- The Commanding Position for your desk sets the tone for confidence, leadership, and success. The ideal placement of your desk is facing the door, at the farthest point away from the door, but not in direct line with the door. An example, if the door is on the right as you enter your office, the desk would be in the back, left of the room facing the door.
- Placement of your desk chair is best if it is supported by a wall behind it. This gives you a view of the door which allows you not only to see people as they arrive; it also allows you to see opportunities coming your way.
- Your desk needs to have walking access on both sides to ensure that planning and taking action is easy and smooth. If your desk has one side against the wall, you are using more effort and personal energy in running the business than necessary.
Better tone equals more opportunities, simple as that.
I would love to hear how this works for you.

OK, so I see from this clearly that my desk could use an adjustment, and just reading this I understand why. Thanks. And it feels good to move it. So even though I am in a little cottage I am seeing that this is possible. Thanks for the tips. I got rid of the clutter and things,,,that I do not use EVERY day and put them into the closet, and my clients started calling again. I forgot that this was the connection, I did it 2 weeks ago. Funny how I need a reminder that it is FLOW in and out of my office that did it. Thanks again. Barbara Martin
